What is Computer?
Computer means a computer that has to be calculated. As the name itself suggests, the job of a computer is to calculate data, so a computer is called a calculating machine. The main function of the computer is to calculate and output the information. A computer can be any machine such as Calculator, Smart Watch, Mobile Phone or any such machine that calculates any given information and works.
So the machine that does the calculation i.e. Calculation is called Computer. In today’s time, the computers that we use, such as mobile, laptop, etc., contain Calculation of data in the form of Binary Number and based on this system, modern computers work. History of Computer
The history of computers is very old, earlier computers were very simple, which were only able to do arithmetic calculations like – addition, subtraction, multiplication etc. We will know the history of computer in the following sections –
Construction of Abacus (ABACUS ) – Abacus is also called the first computer in the world which was designed to do arithmetic calculations. There was a frame of taro in it, round pieces of pucca soil were filled with holes in the center. This machine was able to do addition subtraction, multiplication, division.
Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine – Charles Babbage was a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and thought of developing a mechanical machine for calculating, so that mistakes in calculation could be avoided. Therefore, Charles Babbage built a machine in 1822 and he named this machine “Diffrence Engine”. With the help of this machine, algebraic expressions and statistics tables can be calculated accurately up to 20 digits.
Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine – Inspired by the success of his Diffrence Engine, he envisioned a calculating machine that has a storage capacity and works according to the given program. He named this machine as “Babbage Analytical” engine. This machine had the capability of storing instructions and results could also be printed automatically.
Modern computers were developed by his analytical engine and this is why Charles Babbage is called the father of computer science.
Development and computer generation of computers
Due to lack of accurate information about the generations of computers, five generations of computers are shown below, assuming almost the limit of years –
1- First Generation (1945-1955) – In the first generation of computers, computers with Vacuum Tubes were produced, which used Magnetic Drum and Magnetic Tap for memory. They were very large in size and required a lot of power to run them. These types of computers were manufactured by ENIAC.
2- Second Generation (1955-1963) – In Second Generation of computers, Transistor was used instead of Vacuum Tube, which made them much faster and reliable than First Generation. Second Generation computers were smaller in size than First Generation computers and also much faster.
3- Third Generation (1965-1971) – The third generation of computers started after the invention of Integrated Circuit (IC). The computer speed of Integrated Circuit was very fast and in shape it was like mini computer. High Level Language was used in them.
4 – Fourth Generation (Since 1975) – In the fourth generation of computers, Integrated Circuit was more developed and their size was reduced considerably which brought the entire central processing unit to a small chip. They were called microprocessors and the computers made from them. They could process millions of instructions in a second.
5-Fifth Generation – In the fifth generation of computers, present and future computers come. In today’s time, Artificial Intelligence is being used rapidly and computers are becoming more logical and reliable. With the help of Artificial Intelligence , the computer is capable of taking decisions on its own.
How Computer Works
We know that computers are many Input and Output devices and the computer can work with the help of many hardware and software. The main part of the computer is the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and with the help of this, whatever input we give to the computer gives us the output according to the given input. Whenever we give an instruction to a computer, it reaches the CPU in the Binary Number and the CPU performs several operations on that data according to that instruction and provides the output according to that instruction.
Like we have an audio file and we instructed the computer to play this audio file. Then the computer will process that data or audio file and provide the sound through the speaker. So I hope you guys understand what a computer is.
